The Slovene Arts & Culture Residency in New York was established in 1998 by the Ministry of Culture in partnership with the Open Society Institute – Slovenia and upon the initiative by Tomaž Šalamun, a prominent Slovene poet who served as a cultural attaché in the United States of America between 1996 and 1999.

The residency in Brooklyn was followed by a similar model of renting a studio apartment of Slovene artists in Berlin (2004), London (2008) and Vienna (2012) within the Slovene Arts & Culture Residencies Programme of the Ministry of Culture. Nevertheless, New York remains the most popular destination among the Slovene applicants and thus the most competitive one.

Eligibility

The residencies host Slovene artists, writers, translators, curators, critics, producers, etc., regardless of discipline. Following the open call, the residents are selected by the ministry's expert committee for the following year, considering the submitted proposals that should outline an art project or a research developed in partnerships with local organisations or experts.

The Ministry of Culture covers the rental, maintenance and travel costs. The residency is co-managed by the Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia in Washington.
