Steadily it grew and in 1997 the Kranjska Gora branch was founded. The museum cares for preservation and understanding of cultural and natural heritage of the Upper Sava Valley region, and for the Alpine and ironworks heritage of the wider Slovenian territory. It runs internal library, archival and gallery activities.


Venues

Since 2004 the museum manages heritage collections from the region: in Jesenice Iron-making, Mining and Palaeontologic Collection in Bucellini-Ruard Mansion, Ethnological Collection in Kasarna, Kos Manor House, and Kolpern, the renovated warehouse for charcoal in the iroworks complex of Stara Sava; in Rateče Kajžnik Manor House, in Kranjska Gora Liznjek House, and in Mojstrana Slovenian Alpine Museum.

Collections

The museum manages many different collections at dislocated units: art history collection of ecclesiastic and ironworks motives by Nicola Grassi, Janez Potočnik, Anton Karinger, Heinrich Wettach, …; history collection of iron-making and of mountaineering; ethnological collection; cultural history collection; geological and paleontological collection; and the archives of the KID (Kranjska Industrial Society).

In addition to the permanent exhibitions museum organises temporary exhibitions out of its collections and cooperates with institutions from home and abroad.

Publishing

The museum publishes many monographies on different local topics concerning history of places, people habits, and industrial heritage, i.e. in 2009 monography on history of KID (Kranjska Industrial Society). The exhibitions are accompanied by catalogues.
