Modelled after the famous Hlebine in Croatia, Trebnje Gallery of Naïve Artists is the only gallery in Slovenia which specialises in naïve art. It displays works from its permanent collection of Slovene naïve art, organises annual international meetings, and promotes Slovene naïve art abroad. In 2004, at the World Exhibition of Naïve Art organised by UNESCO in Brno, the Trebnje Gallery of Naïve Artists received a special mention from the jury.

International annual meetings

The first meeting of naïve artists in Trebnje took place in 1967, and since that time the collection has grown to over 1000 works. The Trebnje Gallery of Naïve Artists represents 250 artists from 35 countries in Europe, Africa, Asia, North and South America, and Australia. The 8 participants of the 43rd edition in June 2010 were: Linden Dean (AU), Mladen Kefelja (HR), Darja Lovak (SI), Franco Mora (IT), Samo (SI), Darja Štefančič (SI), Anton Zupančič (SI), and Jan Žolnaj (RS). Each meeting features a solo exhibition, in 2010 under the title Rojstvo Meduze [Rebirth of Medusa] Jože Horvat-Jaki exhibited his drawings created between 1965 and 1980.

Collection

The international character of the annual meetings reflects the international character of the collection of Trebnje Gallery. Among the Slovene artists there are also Anton Repnik, Jože Peternelj-Mauser, Konrad Peternelj-Slovenec, Viktor Magyar, Greta Pečnik, Jože Horvat-Jaki, Irena Polanec, and Boris Žohar. Significant Croatian naïve artists whose works are in the collection include Ivan Rabuzin and Ivan Lacković-Croata. Wooden sculptures have also been contributed by Janko Dolenc, Franc Tavčar and Croatian artist Petar Smajić. Artist of other nationalities participating the meeting recently have been, among others, Dorte Marcussen and Marianne Tümmler (DK), Edna de Araraquara and Zé Cordeiro (PT), Francine Genot (FR), or Lidija Tilić (RS).
