The very first beginnings of the library date in the year 1920 when it was officially established at the University of Ljubljana. Since 1961 it is operating at the current location at the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana.
Along with the general items for the history research, the library's fond is also focused on the history of the neighbouring countries, especially in the context of Austria and Italy. The library's fond also consists of donations and exchanges with other libraries. Library's fond holds the private collections of professors Jadran Ferluga, Gregor Čremošnik, Fran Zwitter, Ignacij Voje and Franček Saje. The copies of the archive collection from Graz on peasant resistance from Tolmin are a significant part of the fond.
The Library regularly informs its users about the new purchased publications at the website of Department of History, University of Ljubljana.
Library also takes care of the fond of Historical Association of Slovenia. Their newspaper Kronika in digital version is available online at the Digital Library. As a part of the scientific collection of the library the scientific series Historia, published by the Department of History is available at the library. The list of contents and a preview of selected articles of old numbers of Historia can be viewed online.
Culture.si offers information on Slovene cultural producers, venues, festivals and support services, all in one place. It encourages international cultural exchange in the fields of arts, culture and heritage. The portal and its content is owned and funded by the Ministry of Culture, funded by the European Union Recovery and Resilience Plan and developed by Ljudmila Art and Science Laboratory.
