The Municipality of Gornja Radgona covers a total area of 128 square kilometres and has a population of 12,310 people (2002) living in 51 settlements. Located close to the border with Austria, Gornja Radgona was a part of Bad Radkesburg until 1918. In 1968 a bridge was built across the Mura River. The region has been known for its production of wine and champagne since the mid 19th century and today the International Food and Crafts Fair is very popular, attracting visitors from Slovenia, Austria and Hungary. In 2001 Gornja Radgona Municipality launched a partnership co-operation with the German town of Bruchsal-Helmsheim, and priority is now given to linking the cultural associations of both towns. Cultural relations with its twinned city of Mladenovac, Serbia, have also been developed.

The Social Activities Department of Gornja Radgona Municipality is responsible for social and health care, education and sports, as well as for public culture and cultural heritage preservation.

There are 20 amateur cultural associations in the municipality, active in the field of folkloric music and dance, theatre and visual arts. The municipality supports them, covering their annual running costs, events, education programmes and equipment purchases. The associations tour both in-country and abroad. The most important investment is Špital, a historic building dating from the 17th century, which is to be renovated into a multipurpose exhibition and lecture room. It is the seat of the local historical association and cultural events are already occasionally organised here by the local branch of the Public Fund for Cultural Activities.

The local branches of the Union of Cultural Societies of Slovenia (ZKDS) and the Public Fund for Cultural Activities of the Republic of Slovenia (JSKD) facilitate the activities of local cultural organisations and act as mediators in respect of state and municipal funding.
