This multifunctional building houses artist's studios equipped with facilities for drawing, painting, woodcarving and sculpting in stone and metalwork. An art foundry for casting into sand, cast moulds and ceramics is also available, as well as a library, a multimedia room, and a permaculture garden. The resulting artworks can be exhibited temporarily in the dining room or in the studios themselves, and possibly in other art venues of the region. Background
Its establishment as a non-profit NGO for culture, art and development in 2000 was the result of a successfully-implemented TEMPUS PHARE Cross-Border cooperation project to create an intra-regional cultural-artistic centre on the border between Slovenia and Hungary.
With spring 2007, the Art Centre was closed due to a local government decision. Several protests were lodged, and in the meantime, the Art Središče Institute and its crew have been operating the Asylum Studio at Metelkova mesto Autonomous Cultural Centre in collaboration with the KUD Mreža Arts and Culture Association. After several public campaigns and with the involvement of the Ministry of Culture (which then became the owner of the premises), the crew managed to move back in April 2008.
Programme
In the past, Art Center hosted events such as: Metamorphosis'04 – International student sculpting festival; a couple of ten-day workshops on video/documentary skills, held by the Slovene director Bogdan Mrovlje; an Open Code Workshop; and many other international artistic meetings, workshops and exhibitions. Some of the artists-in-residence were Hellen Terry (UK), the Swiss actor Dominique Jann, Alexandra Filiatreaux (FR), Evelin Stermitz (AT) and Mariëtte van Duin (NL).
A big part of the Art Center Prosenjakovci programme is its focus on ecology, ecological farming and other topics along this vein.
Open Call
Residencies are possible on two locations – at the Art Center in Prekmurje region and residential Asylum Studio in Ljubljana. They are focused on alternative production practices. In their own words: "We are a creative and self-sustainable community, not a hotel. Your presence makes a difference, not profit." Participants are encouraged to be autonomous in their everyday life as in their artistic field. They offer production help and financing for the production costs when relevant to the proposed project.
Applications are opened all year round and the duration of the stay can be planned on individual needs. Based on past residential stays, the duration of stay is possible from a few days up to a year.
Application forms are available on the web page, applicants receive the decision in one to three weeks after applying.
