The first municipal theatre in Celje was located in a building constructed in 1824 next to one of the four towers of the medieval wall. Known today as the Slovene People’s Theatre (SLG Celje), it currently stages around seven new productions a year, presented in over 180 performances and featuring up to 50 performances of new works.

SLG Celje also hosts around 50 guest events every year, the most popular being the traditional Days of Comedy, and the more recent Days of Children's Theatre Programme.
