The Slovene Art History Society, established in 1921 by Izidor Cankar, publishes the Art History Journal. The first number of the journal was published the same year with Cankar as its first editor. Published once a year, the Art History Journal presents the recent research results of art historians dealing with topics related to Slovene or international (especially regional) art history as well as the best articles of the students at the Department of Art History, University of Ljubljana.

Tradition and New Challenges

This scientific peer-reviewed journal has one of the longest traditions among Slovene art history publications. The publishing stopped for a brief period of time near the end of the Second World War and for a few years after the war. In 1951 the numbering of each issue of the journal re-started from the beginning.

Today Art History Journal focuses on scientific articles and debates, as well as reviews of books on art history, reports and chronicles. The views of authors belonging to different generational perspectives and from international contexts are published in the journal covering topics from Renaissance painting and Christian Art to contemporary art and photography. The journal follows recent academic and conceptual issues in art history theory, for example, the emerging status of the curator in the world of contemporary art production. This question was critically and historically debated in the article by Beti Žerovc (The Role of the Contemporary Art Curator: A Historical and Critical Analysis).

International activity

The Art History Journal has a Slovene editorial board and a consulting international editorial board with members from Italy, Croatia, Austria, and the USA. Articles are accepted in Slovenian, Croatian, English, German, Italian, or Serbian language and are published in their originally submitted language without translation. The archive of the Art History Journal from the year 1997 on is also available online in pdf format.
