Beside the Centre for Tourist Promotion and the Event Centre is the Centre for Contemporary Arts one of three brunches of the Celeia Institute. Established in 2005, the Celeia Institute – Centre for Contemporary Arts manages the Celje Gallery of Contemporary Art, Likovni salon Celje, Račka Gallery, the AIR - programme of residency for artists and curators, the Pelikan tower , specialised on the photography and located in the old castle of Celje. Soon it will overtook also the managing and organisation of the programme in Friderik tower, still in renovation, where long term site-specific exhibitions are going to be featured.

Although the programme of each space of the Celeia Institute is specialised, the Institute occasionally features huge thematic group exhibitions simultaneously in its two or more spaces as it was in the summer 2008, when the exhibition in thwo parts entitled the Image of the space [Podoba prostora] was realized in the the Celje Gallery of Contemporary Art and in the Likovni salon Celje. The very complex project was featuring more than 50 art positions of regional artists and it was developed by the house curator Alenka Domjan in the cooperation of guest curators Petra Kapš (Relations between the collective and particular [Relacije med kolektivnim in posameznim]), Mojca Puncer (Razpiranje prizorišč vidnega: podoba, medij, telo), and Milena Koren Božiček in the 2nd part of the exhibition, reflecting the horizons of individuals.

AIR CELEIA - artists and curators on residency

Based on mobility, inter-disciplinarity, participation the Celeia Institute – Centre for Contemporary Arts runs since 2005 the AIR - programme of residency for artists and curators from abroad with the aim of building a dialogue and cooperation between foreign and local artists as well as between art and the broader community. One year long residency offers accommodation and symbolic scholarship, it does not cover travelling costs. Since the beginning 3 residents took part of the programme.

The AIR programme emerged as a result of the need for a more active flow of people and ideas in the field of culture and art in Celje. The programme is conceived to encourages artists in residence to create ties and actively participate in the local community, as well as enable local artists to work in a foreign environment. This provides them with new contacts and new models of production and presentation.

The AIR programme is in the phase of the profesionalisation. Among others there are intentions to bring the programme on the bilateral exchange level, so to cooperate with other residency programmes in Europe and world wide.
