Part of the Peace Institute at the Institute of Contemporary Social and Political Study, the Centre for Media Policy focuses on the strengthening of the media community in Slovenia, the inclusion of experts in the drafting of media legislation, and the setting-up of self-regulation and accountability systems within the Slovene media. The activities of the centre include regular public discussions and publications, with an emphasis on the freedom and credibility of the media, and the practical implementation of the highest professional standards in journalism.

The Centre develops training and fellowship programmes for journalists and exchange programmes for journalists and media experts, encouraging and facilitating the development of international contacts and regional and international co-operation of media companies and professional associations in Slovenia. Work areas include the analysis of media practices and policy in Slovenia, public debates and publications dealing with journalism and the media, the stimulation of self-regulation within the media, support for the professional development of journalists and media experts and international co-operation in the media field. The Centre also organises regular panel debates on current issues.

The Centre manages Media Watch, which is responsible for study and monitoring the mass media in Slovenia and publishing essays and articles on its work in the Media Watch Magazine and Media Watch bilingual book series. Media Watch Magazine is published quarterly and is also available on the website. In recent years the Media Watch book series has issued the following titles: Media for Citizens; EUrosis: A Critique of the New Eurocentrism; Media Ownership: Impact on Media Independence and Pluralism in Slovenia and Other Post-socialist European Countries; Media Representations of Homosexuality : an Analysis of the Print Media in Slovenia, 1970-2000; and Violence in the Media: the Extent and the Influence of Violence in the Media in Slovenia. Other titles are available at the website http://www.mirovni-institut.si/eindex.htm.

The Centre is a member of the South East European Network for the Professionalisation of the Media.
