The first beginnings of this reference library date back to 1923, when the Archaeological Seminar was established at the University of Ljubljana. Its founding collection was based on purchasing the collection from the private library of archaeologist Luka Jelić from Zagreb.
After the Second World War the first structural changes were made. An inventory was taken and the international exchange of books began. In 1961 the library moved to the head unit of the Faculty of Arts on Aškerčeva Street, later in 1991, it was moved to its current location on Zavetiška Street.
