The Department of Painting offers a reformed programme of study since 2009. According to the submitted portfolio and the admission exam score about 20 students are excepted each year in the tree-year undergraduate programme. The main subject is choosen in the second year of study: painting, printmaking art (graphic art) or video and new media art. Students of video and new media art can collaborate with the Faculty of Computer and Information Science, University of Ljubljana.
The courses can be taken as full-time, part-time or parallel studies. The study has 6 semesters with 180 credit points (ECTS) in total and includes general knowledge and specialist skills. The program consists of practical part (studio experience and technical demonstrations) and theoretical part (lectures and seminars).
The study is based on drawing live model that enables students to practically explore the methods and techniques from an individual perspective. The students are encouraged to experiment with different techniques and reflect the transformation of an image through different media.
At the end of every semester a students' exhibition is held at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design. Selected students can also exhibit their works on group exhibitions and festivals during the school year (e.g. Speculum Artium Festival).
Masters programme will take two years and is expected to start in 2012. The students will be able to choose their mentors. For now the Academy of Fine Arts and Design does not offer a programme of doctoral study.

It encourages international cultural exchange in the fields of arts, culture and heritage. The portal and its content is owned and funded by the Ministry of Culture, funded by the European Union Recovery and Resilience Plan and developed by Ljudmila Art and Science Laboratory.
