Foremost a sales gallery for visual arts, DobraVaga is simultaneously also an exhibition space and an open studio for practitioners of various artistic languages. Set in city's central marketplace and overlooking the Ljubljanica river (with the whole complex designed by none other than the famed architect Jože Plečnik), DobraVaga opened its doors in 2016. Run by Kino Šiška Centre for Urban Culture, it also has a small bar (currently not yet active).

The place is especially focused on artists of the younger generation and deals in a variety of art forms, from paintings, illustration and graphic design to artist's multipls and artist's books.

Background

DobraVaga came to be as an extension of the exhibition programme conducted at Kino Šiška, where works of young, yet unestablished artists are frequently presented. It turned out there is a very limited space for these artists to sell their works, so DobraVaga was set up as a vehicle for the protagonists of the emerging and marginal arts scenes to enter the art market.

The name Dobra vaga could be translated as "a good measure", thus alluding surrounding marketplace. This is echoed by the gallery's motto – art by the pound.

Exhibition and sales programme

The gallery's agenda is basically four-fold, with the first one being their sales programme. The artists set their own prices for their works and get the better percentage of that, with the prices generally being rather low and never excessively high. The represented artists are chosen by the galleries committee and besides the less known ones one can here also purchase works by David Krančan, Natan Esku, Mina Fina, Zek Crew, Zoran Pungerčar, etc.

Additionally, DobraVaga also has an open studio where the some sort of 'residencies' take place. Open on a daily basis, this studio is given to a chosen artist (of contemporary artistic and visual creed, regardless of his particular medium of expression) to work in free of charge in for three months. As it is open quite literally, the visitors of Dobravaga have an opportunity to see the artist in action and catch glimpses of his creative process.

The works created during these residencies are consequently also shown in the artist per month exhibition programme. This is a series of exhibitions that sort of complement the ones held in Kino Šiška, but are done on a lesser scale and are slightly more open to developing and artists.

Zine vitrine

Zine vitrine (zine displays), the fourth part of DobraVaga's activities, relates to art zines, which are a sort of a artist's book artefacts, but produced small scale and with minimum costs, often via a DIY approach. It combines a public library/archive collection, monthly showcases (of either personal collections or specific artists), various workshops and a sales programme. The zine reading room is located in the DobraVaga space and invites reading and browsing.
