Equrna Gallery was established in 1982 as the first private gallery in the former Yugoslavia by a group of artists (some of them are now professors at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design) as association of freelance artists with Taja Vidmar Brejc, nowadays the owner and the director, and Marjeta Marinčič on the head. From the outset Equrna has been an exhibition space and a retail gallery of contemporary creation and brought. It is also pioneer of Slovenian participation on the international art fairs.


History and Location

In the first years of operation the Gallery Equrna, the name is borrowed from Celtic goddess of the Ljubljanica river and Ljubljana swampland, prepared guest exhibitions in various venues like in the atrium of Ljubljana town hall, Ljubljana Municipal gallery and in hotel Slon. Since November 1984 it has had its own exhibition spaces in a renovated courtyard building at Gregorčičeva 3 in the centre of the city that was built in the early 18th century as stables for Napoleon’s army. Gallery space occupies a total area of 300 sqare metres, separated in two areas, both with arches and four metres high ceiling.

Programme and Artists

In the tempo once per month The gallery offer on the view the newest art works of represented artists mostly in the format of solo exhibitions, occasionaly they show also group shows. Equrna presents work by the mid-generation which defined Slovene art during the 1980s along with the output of younger artists. All together represent the Gallery more than 50 artists.

From the pinnacle of creativity in Slovenia’s post-modern art scene after 1980 they represent: Emerik Bernard, Metka Krašovec, Gustav Gnamuš, Tugo Sušnik, Živko Marušič, Jože Slak, Sergej Kapuš, Žarko Vrezec, Irwin, VSSD, Dušan Kirbiš, Andraž Šalamun, Bojan Gorenc and Sandi Červek. Some younger artists are also represented, including Aleksij Kobal, Zdenka Žido, Eva Heimer, Andrej Brumen Čop, Robert Ložar, Zvonka Simčič, Mojca Oblak Crowther, Irena Romih, Marko Jakše and Petra Varl. Some artists of younger generation: Ksenija Čerče, Mitja Ficko, Anja Jerčič, Polona Maher, Arjan Pregl, Natalija Šeruga, Katja Sudec.


International Art Fairs and Collections

Equrna Gallery has participated in all major international fine art fairs, eg Art Basel, LA Art Fair, Art forum Berlin, ARCO-Madrid and Art Chicago. Since its foundation the Gallery has prepared over 400 exhibitions in Slovenia and abroad and formed the Factor Bank Art Collection. Works from Equrna’s collection adorn many important business buildings.

For the last 20 years the gallery has co-operated with the corporate sector, selling works to the Factor Bank, Moravske toplice, Zdravilišča Krke spas and for private interiors. All artists whose works can be commissioned at Equrna Gallery are presented on its website.
