Organized since 1964 by the Obalne galerije - Coastal Galleries, the Ex-tempore Piran - International Painting and Ceramics is one of the oldest competitive art festivals of its kind in Slovenia. Commenced as the painting festival, the Ex-tempore Piran has been accompanied since 1995 by the ceramics part, since 2003 also by the Genius Loci Lera Workshop at the nearby salt-pans at Sečovlje. As traditionally, also the 45th international painting Ex-tempore and the 10th international ceramics Ex-tempore in 2009 were concluded with the presentation of awards.

The number of participants of the painting part of event who have sent their works has in 2009 risen to 351 artists - 40 per cent of these are professional academic artists, while the rest are amateur artists who are eager to offer their creative work for comparative evaluation. Out of 311 works presented to the international jury, 149 of them were afterwards exhibited in Piran City Gallery and in the Storehouse of salt Monfort in Portorož. International jury of the festival bestowed works of different categories: the grand prix for painting (in 2009 to Matej Čepin), further major purchase prizes, the young artist prize, the watercolour prize and honourable mentions. The festival of ceramics also gives the grand prix (in 2009 went to Anja Radović) plus a solo exhibition at the Pečarič Gallery - in 2009 went to Andreja Trkman. Upon viewing selected exhibited works, various sponsors award around 40 additional purchase prizes.
