As the initiative of Jakob Savinšek and Janez Lenassi is the Forma Viva Open Air Wood Sculpture Collection, Kostanjevica na Krki one of four International Symposia of Sculptors in Slovenia that together with the Forma Viva Open Air Stone Sculpture Collection, Seča near Portorož started in 1961 the tradition of workshops Forma Viva in Slovenia. Both sculptors modelled workshops after a symposium held in St Margharethen (Austria, 1959). Later, two other venues were included: Ravne na Koroškem (1964, steel) and Maribor (1967, reinforced concrete).

In the course of the four decades this international project of 'live' sculpture in the open-air has involved sculptors from all over the world who have enriched the cultural treasures of Slovenia with around 300 sculptures, just in Kostanjevica more than 100, where all are exhibited in natural surroundings, in the gardens of a former monastery, and in the very city and nearby areas.

Background

In its early years the Forma Viva in Kostanjevica that focused on the wood sculpture ran annual. Between 1965 and 1988 it was organised every second year. At the end of the 1980's Forma Viva had ended everywhere, except in Seča. After the break of a decade the Forma Viva in Kostanjevica was revitalised in 1998.

Since then it is a biennial event that invites each year 3 sculpturers. Applications for the participation for artist from throughout the world are also possible. The dead line for the application is usually on the end of the non biennial year. In 2010 artists are creating in July.

Artists

In last years following artist participated: Boštjan Drinovec (Slovenia), Sreten Milatović (Serbia and Montenegro) and Niculae Seaptefrati (Romania) in 2004; Magdalena Miocinović Andrić (Serbia), Urša Toman Drinovec (Slovenia) and Agnessa Ivanova Petrova (Bulgaria) in 2006; Polona Demšar (Slovenia), Klaus Grosskopf (Germany) and Samo Skoberne (Slovenia/Germany) in 2008.
