Following the idea of Paris salons from the end of 19th and the beginning of 20th century (Salon des Indépendants, Salon d’Automne and Salon des Refusés) is the May Salon Slovene exhibition of such. It was established in the beginning of 20th century featuring then very avantgard exhibition of Slovene Impressionists in Mestni dom in Ljubljana. In last decades organised more and less regularly by the Union of Slovene Fine Arts Associations (ZDSLU), the May salon gives annually the possibility to its around 680 members to exhibit their newest production. Usually featured in the Springtime there were some changes of the location and focus in the last decade to noticed.


Since the 1990s the May Salon has concluded with the presentation of the May Salon Award on the artist of the best work and on the best young artist. Works displayed at the May Salon exhibition are usually for sale.

Location

Through 80s and 90s it usually took place at the City Art Museum Ljubljana and at Jakopičev paviljon, today the Jakopič Gallery. In 2005 it was hosted for the first time by four galleries on the coast, and co-organised by Insula-Obala Visual Artists Association. Since then the location

Focus

Each year there is a general annual presentation followed by a thematic show - previous themes have included New Media (1997), Sculpture (1998), Painting (1999) and Primordial Touch (2000). In 2003 all 110 works were shown unselected. The 2004 May Salon presented the work of 130 artists from all of the Slovene regions under the name POP, with P as Pomembno ('Interesting') or Prešerno ('Merry'), O as Odlično ('Excellent') or Odvisno ('Dependent') and P as Prezrto ('Overlooked') and Pozabljeno ('Forgotten').

The May Salon is organised by the Union of Slovene Fine Arts Associations (ZDSLU), its origins going back to the Slovene artists exhibition in 1909 that took place in the Jakopič Pavillion. +
