The Minorite Church, Maribor (previously also called the church of Mary Vnebovzewtja) is a new performing arts venue set up in 2015. Set on the bank of the Drava river in Maribor, in the city's old medieval quarter called Lent, the former church has gone throgh a thorough reconstruction between the years 2013 and 2015. Since than it has been used for a variety of cultural events, from classical music and contemporary choir concerts to puppet theatre plays and lectures. Art exhibitions are also predvidene.

The venue is managed by the Maribor Puppet Theatre, which has been since 2010 located in the adjacent, also recently reconstructed former Minorite convent. The renovated church made for an audience of aproximately 300, has been designed by ATELIERarhitekti.

History

During the reconstruction it was discovered that the churc h was actually a bit odler (300 hundered years) than presumed, and is now dated in around 12th century (before that, in the 11th century, the site was used as a feudal court and its usage goes back much further). Some of its romanic foundation (when it was the biggest churc in the region) can still be seen, as can its later ghotic variation, which featured the odlest known earlygothic portal (built between 1250 nad 1270) in Slovenia.

Later the church has gone through a sreries of further baroqizations and renovations until ion 1784 it was claimed by the army as its army barracks and later warehouse. In 20th Century, the place was emptied and has remaiuned so until its refurbishemnt as a art venue.

The church history museum

As the renovation unearthed a number of artefacts and even found old tombs beneath the church grounds, an additional basement floor was now added. There one can see the three layers of the churchs architectural history – its romanic, gotic and baroqe layers. Additinally, the crypts and some other remains can be seen there.

Performing arts venue

The venue served as an occasional venue for scenic alternative performances during the period when the SNG Maribor was led by Tomaž Pandur, e.g. a vanguard interpretation of the Wedekind's Lulu directed by Eduard Miler in 1990. Additionally, it was also used as an occasional venues for Lent festival, and for example Terrafolj performed there.

The grand opening of the new venues was done in the scope of the Festival maribor in 2015, when the oud virtuoso J. Tawadros was hosted. The festival je umestil a part of its programme into the monastery< also in 20'16, with Nicolas Altstaedt. The church also hosted the contemporary choral music festival Janus festival, was one of the venues ofr Lent festival, and is used by the famed choir Carmina Slovenica. The Platforma festival also took palce there

Additionally, the church is also the site of lectures and for some site-specific shadow puppet (Pirat in luna v režiji Tina Grabnarja.) shows by the Maribor Puppet Theatre.
