Background
The institutional history of the museum can be traced back to the year 1939, when the Museum society for political districts of Brežice and Krško was founded. Than, it was partly set in the building it once again occupies today (though it was emptied in 1948) and partly in the desacralised church (which is nowadays home of the Krško Gallery).
As for the mansion that is now the museum, its 'recent' history is a bit more complicated. In the second quarter of the 18th century Anton pl. Hohenwart, the great-great-grandson of Valvasor, lived in it and was an avid amateur collector (and thus in a way also the predecessor of the today's museum). He was probably part of the reason why in 1894 the house was mistakenly labelled as the place where Janez Vajkard Valvasor spent his last years, though in fact the house was built and functioned with a wholly different purpose. Yet, in 1966 even a statue of Valvasor was raised in front of the house and the misconception was only discovered as such during the renovation of the house, which was not long before the museum was opened.
Yet, the real Valvasor's house was found to be one not far of – the Mencinger's House. Its owner at the end of the 19th Century was actually very vocal about the unfounded claims about the supposed Valvasor's house, yet he was also unaware about the fact that his was the actuall one. Anyway, in 2013 this building also became to be partly led by the museum.
Valvasor complex
Between 2008 and 2010, three houses of Krško's historic city centre were renovated by EU regional development funds. One is where the museum is now held, and there were also two others – the Jarničeva house and the Kaplanova house – all three houses present the main and architecturally most important part of the city centre. Due to the at that time still mistaken ideas, the area was named as the Valvasor's complex.
The place now also house the local JSKD office, the tourist information centre, the offices of various municipal cultural institutions and also gives place to a few local cultural associations. This museum takes care of the architectural legacy of complex.
Collections
The permanent collections at the museum are the follwing - the Janez Vajkard Valvasor collection, presenting documents and artefacts from vavasor's life (and his family), a facsimile of his graphic collection called Iconotheca Valavsoriana and some more. With him related is also the second collection, the room of honey products and gingerbread making – as he was the first in the Slovene region writing about the heritage and the ways of beekeeping and honey processing at that time. He described beekeeping, obtaining and processing honey as well as making qualitative mead and famous Carniolan gingerbread products. This is connected to the trade of honey between Krško and the city of Zagreb, a project partly done in cooperation with the Coratian museums.
Another collections is called "The Long Enlightenment 18th century", yet another is dedicated to the 19th century businesswoman and patron Josipina Hočevar, and a exhibitons of works of the sculptor Vladimir Štoviček.
Mencinger's house
There is a room with frescoes of protestant portraits from around 1550 and a also a huge number of space for other purposes.
Temporary collections and events
There was a number of temporrary collectiosn, some of them were focused on the history of local urban crafts, about the local monks and the life, a few exhibitions on exiles and also one on the history of the neighbouring town of Brežice.
A number of local events are held here, most of them open and some private. Among them are lectures on historic figures, poetry evenings, book discussions, exhibitions, hitoric lectures and workshops. The museum organises a number of the latter to school children, from the main topics of the museum to ones like on the camera obscura.
The museum also has a project in scope of which display windows in the city center are temporarily transformed into exhibitions for both artistic pieces and historical topics.
