Rokus Publishing House was founded in 1991. In 2004 49 per cent of the company was sold to the German publishing house Ernst Klett Sprachen, the Rokus Klett Publishing House was established, and the new resources used to establish branch offices in Belgrade and Zagreb. Rokus Klett opened its own bookshop in Ljubljana. Some monographs have been recognised as the most attractive Slovene books and the textbooks have won several awards.


The company's principal activity has been educational publishing with emphasis on the publication of textbooks and supplementary materials for the nine years of primary school. Rokus has won prestigious Slovene awards for their outstanding design, as well as international awards such as: the 2003 Global Learning Initiative Award for the Most Innovative Material for The World of Words 7; the 2003 European Educational Publishers Group Award for Best European Textbook, also for The World of Words 7; the 2004 European Educational Publishers Group Merit Award for Science and Craft 5; and the 2005 Gourmand World Cookbook Award for Best Wine Guide for the book Wines of Slovenia (Rokus Gifts Ltd).

In 2003 the publishing house Rokus started publishing the National Geographic Junior, in 2006 it launched the National Geographic Slovenija, the National Geographic Mini and Beo beo, while in 2007 the National Geographic Popotnik and Umko magazine appeared. The Rokus Darila ('Gifts') sell the selected objects (cups, glasses, etc) designed by Slovene visual artists or designers (Zora Stančič, Petra Varl, Oskar Kogoj, etc.).
