The Slovene Arts & Culture Residency in New York was established in 1998 by the Slovene Ministry of Culture in partnership with the Open Society Institute - Slovenia upon the initiative by Tomaž Šalamun, a prominent Slovene poet who served as a cultural attaché in the United States of America between 1996 and 1999. In 2004 the residency in Brooklyn was followed by the one in Berlin that finally led to the establishment of a network of 4 studio apartments within the Slovene Arts & Culture Residencies Programme of the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport. Nevertheless, New York remains the most popular destination among the Slovene applicants and is thus the most competitive.
