The Slovene Study Library in Klagenfurt was established in 1927 as the Central Library of the Slovene Education Association. Today, it is the largest Austrian library with materials in Slovenian. Its collection consists of more than 130,000 book and non-book items and over 500 periodical titles. Since 1997, the library has been a member of COBISS - Slovene Virtual Library network. The institution has also been a member of the Reading Badge of Slovenia Association since 1977.

Background

The roots of Slovene librarianship in Austrian Carinthia date back to the 1920s. In 1927 the Slovene Education Association, formerly known as the Slovene Christian Social Association, founded the first central library, which later became the Slovene Study Library. During World War II a large part of its collection was destroyed or confiscated. Gradually, the library was reconstructed, and its collection has been increasing in size ever since.
