The competition is today run in three age categories: up to the average age of 20, 25, or 30 years. Groups in each age category must play two obligatory pieces: one work of a Slovene artist and one work from a world composer.
The competition is named after Primož Ramovš (1921-1999) who was very prolific Slovene composer of the second half of the 20th century. He composed almost exclusively instrumental music and is considered to be one of the most abstract Slovene composers of classical music.
