The first two competitions (2001 and 2004) were organised within the annual summer academy of chamber music Musical July on the Coast, which was maintained by the Koper Music School. In 2007, the competition changed its location to the Ljubljana Vič-Rudnik Music School and its name to Primož Ramovš Competition for Chamber Music Groups. The 5th Primož Ramovš Competition in 2015 was organised under the auspices of Radio-Television Slovenia (RTV Slovenia) and the Society of Slovene Composers in the Ljubljana Music and Ballet Conservatory. Its artistic director has always been Tomaž Lorenz.
The competition is today run in three age categories: up to the average age of 20, 25, or 30 years. Groups in each age category must play two obligatory pieces: one work of a Slovene artist and one work from a world composer.
The competition is named after Primož Ramovš (1921–1999) who was very prolific Slovenian composer of the second half of the 20th century. He composed almost exclusively instrumental music and is considered to be one of the most abstract Slovenian composers of classical music and a pioneer of the Slovenian musical avant-garde.
