The Department of Geography at the University of Ljubljana has a long tradition. The department offers 2 study programmes, both pedagogic and non-pedagogic, as well as the option to combine geography with another subject to create a bi-disciplinary study programme. The PhD in Geography is offered as a part of the interdisciplinary doctoral programme, offered at the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Social Sciences.

The Department of Geography was established in 1919, the same year as Ljubljana's university. The 32 staff members, both pedagogic and non-pedagogic, deal with around 500 students, at a graduate and postgraduate study programme. In 2002 the department launched a research institute, focusing on environmental and regional-development studies.

The Department of Geography also houses the largest geographical library, which is a part of the Faculty of Arts Central Humanities Library.

There are several publications run by the department's staff and its collaborators. One is DELA, a periodical aimed at scientific paper and materials. The other publication is GeograFF aimed at a more general public interested in geography. Articles from both publications are available in digital format at - Digital Library of Slovenia.
