About
Dedicated to a specific topic of global relevance each year, the Month of Design offers a platform for creative discourse on design, an indoor and outdoor exhibition space for outstanding images, and a colourful range of events creating an inspiring atmosphere of the city. The best achievements are honoured by the National Design Awards.
Every year the festival brings together various partners who organize different events on a diverse palette of various places such as expos, galleries, museums, shops and salons, exhibition places, studios, open markets, pop-up locations and warehouses, thus establishing a creative image and vibrations of a dynamic city.
Selected festival topics
The 17th Month of Design in 2019 attracted the most proactive creators from 19 Southeast European countries by means of its increasingly popular regional awards that were granted in four main categories: product design and fashion, interior design, innovative wood technology, creative tourism. The central Month of Design event was represented by the international Zavod Big exhibition that displayed the awarded projects from all four categories in the national pavilions of the Southeast European countries. Month of Design 2019 created and promoted various festival activities taking place all around the capital during the entire event.
"Month of Design 2014 was an important forum for fashion and product design in Europe with the ambition to gain worldwide recognition, competing with the world's design capitals, such as Milan, Paris, Tokyo and New York," said the director of the festival Zmago Novak at it's official opening. That year there was a special forum for architecture using wood as a building material.
In 2009 under the theme "Sustaining Design Excellence" the Month of Design consisted of more than 100 individual events, among them Conference 09, Design EXPO – Brands & Science exhibition, Design in the City, National Design Awards ceremony and Eat & Drink Design. The 2008 event was entitled "Experience". In 2007, the Month of Design found inspiration in "Mediterranean identities".
The event's official publication, the Month of Design Catalogue provides key information on domestic and international trends in product, interior, and fashion design. It features award winners, innovative designers, architects, fashion designers, and Slovene and foreign brands presented at the design conference. The Big Design Directory formed an important part of the catalogue – a database of designers and companies involved in creative industries is now available only online.
Programme
Full of outstanding events, the Month of Design has formed a frame of a fixed annual programme alongside a variety of accompanying presentations, fashion shows, and installations.
As part of the Month of Design, Zavod Big hosts its annual design conference with eminent guests – internationally active and engaged practitioners – from designers and architects to managers and consultants to planners and strategists. In 2019 Month of Design attracted creators from 19 Southeast European countries by means of its increasingly popular regional awards. The central Month of Design event was represented by the international BigSEE exhibition that displayed the awarded projects from all four categories in the national pavilions of the Southeast European countries. Four main festival days were Design Expo, Big Architecture, Wood Icon and Creative tourism, while the whole month there were several events and exhibitions in the city of Ljubljana (Design in the city).
Design Expo brings together exhibitors from a wide, interdisciplinary array of design spheres and activities, including companies and institutions, faculties and students.
Design in the City offers an opportunity to showcase design work either through presentation or exhibition at a chosen locations in the city centre. It aims to inhabit public space with products and events, to promote quality design, and thus contribute to a creative appearance of the city.
Awards
National Design Awards are awarded in four categories: Design of the year (the award for the best product design in the last year), Interior of the year (the award for best interior design achievement in the last year), Timeless design (for the design that's passed the test of time and proved that it has an everlasting value), and Perspectives (for recognisable achievements designed by young talents in the fields of industrial design, fashion, and architecture).
