In 1999 Mladinska knjiga began to honour lifetime achievements with awards to children's authors and illustrators (recent winners include the authors Svetlana Makarovič, Polonca Kovač, Niko Grafenauer and Dane Zajc, and the artists Kostja Gatnik, Matjaž Schmidt, Alenka Sottler and Jelka Reichman).
The recent recipients of the Levstik Award for original literature works were Majda Koren, Andrej Rozman-Roza, Anja Štefan and Desa Muck, while the awards for original illustration went to the artists Damijan Stepančič, Svjetlan Junaković, Alenka Sottler and Suzana Bricelj).
