The history of foundation of the Department dates back to 1926 when the seminar on comparative literature was established. In 1929 the study of comparative literature became independent, the vibrant years of academic development followed after the Second World War. The years were marked with the implementation of new study methods and significant members of the Department, such as literature theoretician Dušan Pirjevec.
Today six Professors and two Assistant Professors collaborate with lecturers from other departments and institutions. The Department has its own library.
