The Department was established relatively recenelty, in 1987, when it was formed as an independent depertment within the Faculty of Arts. The establishing of the department was in the domain of Professor Branko Berčič. He studied Slavic languages at the Faculty of Arts and for several years worked at the research centre of NUK.
Before 1987 the Chair for Librarianship was functiong at the Faculty of Education. After the opening, the number of students was increasing year by year, so did the number of the academic staff. The effort of the professors and students also resulted with the opening of postgraduate studies, which was beforehand possible with the collaboration of the Department of Sociology.
The Department ocassionally publishes the series Bibliothecaria. Some of the publications are available on the Department's website, also the ILFA (International Federation of Library Associations) principles on care and handling the library material.
In recent years the Department was active in reorganising the old system according to the new Bologna system. It is also active in international context and ERASMUS/SOCRATES student exchange. So far, the partner universities for student exchange include the universites in Leipzig, Boras, Prague, London, Graz, Valencia, Udine, Oxford, Vilnius and Bratislava.
In 2007 the special edition of the Jubilee Journal dedicated to the 20th Anniversary of the Department and to 80th birthday of Branko Berčič was published. The Journal is available online at the dlib as a pdf file.
Culture.si offers information on Slovene cultural producers, venues, festivals and support services, all in one place. It encourages international cultural exchange in the fields of arts, culture and heritage. The portal and its content is owned and funded by the Ministry of Culture, funded by the European Union Recovery and Resilience Plan and developed by Ljudmila Art and Science Laboratory.
