The Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands was opened in 2001 as an official representative for the Dutch citizens living or residing in Slovenia. It provides a range of consular services, disseminates information about Netherlands in Slovenia and looks for cooperation opportunities in the field of economy and trade. Its tasks also include the promotion of Dutch arts and culture, focusing on design, architecture, visual arts, human rights and LGBT rights.

The legal basis for cooperation in culture, education and science between the two states was adopted in 1992 as a part of succession of the former republic of Yugoslavia.



Art and design

The Embassy has been working on a one-month Bilateral Focus held all over venues in Slovenia since 2001. Its aim was to promote economic solutions, trade, arts and culture from the Netherlands in Slovenia. Events during October were involved companies, cinemas, schools, faculties and art institutions from Ljubljana and major Slovenian towns. After ten successful years the October event was held for the last time in 2011.

However, the Embassy is still strongly present in promoting design, both industrial and graphic. In 2012 is supported the 22nd edition of Biennial of Design (BIO) at the Museum of Architecture and Design entitled Design relations and curated by Margo Konings and Magriet Vollenberg.

In 2011 the Embassy supported mobile global exhibition Show your hope, initiated by visual artist Martin Voorbij and co-produced by Stripcore/Forum Ljubljana and Foundation80Q. Among total of more than 800 artist from all over the world, the numerous Slovenian artists active in the project were presented during the European Capital of Culture 2012 in Maribor.

Music, literature and theatre

Besides guest musician at Jazz Cerkno Festival the Embassy also supported Sonica International Festival of Transitory Art in 2011, which hosted several artist from the Netherlands (Blendid, Arno Scheper, Carolien Teunisse, etc.).

As a part of ongoing projects, the Embassy funded guest appearances of many authors, such as Magriet de Moor at Fabula Festival, Joris Ivens, Frank Westerman at Festival Ljubljana, Ester Naomi Perquin at Days of Poetry and Wine Festival and many others.

In 2013 theatre production from the Netherlands was the focus of 48th edition of Maribor Theatre Festival, the oldest and biggest theatre festival in Slovenia. For this occasion a publication with four Dutch theatre plays in Slovene was published.

Photography and film

For years one of the supported photo projects was World Press Photo exhibition held at [[Cankarjev dom] which presented stunning annual overview of photo journalism. For many years the Embassy supported Emzin Cultural Institute, in 2011 they supported seminar of visual communications, with Max Kisman and Niels Schrader as guest lectures.
