In the course of the four decades this international project of 'live' sculpture in the open-air has involved sculptors from all over the world who have enriched the cultural treasures of Slovenia with around 300 sculptures, just in Kostanjevica more than 100, where all are exhibited in natural surroundings, in the gardens of a former monastery, and in the very city and nearby areas.
In its early years the Forma Viva in Kostanjevica that focused on the wood sculpture ran annual. Between 1965 and 1988 it was organised every second year. At the end of the 1980's Forma Viva had ended everywhere, except in Seča. After the break of a decade the Forma Viva in Kostanjevica was revitalised in 1998.
