Established in 2004, the Institute of Historical Studies conducts research which focuses on studies of Primorska and Istria as a complex geographical region and an historical meeting point of different ethnic groups, nations and cultures of central Europe and the Mediterranean, as well as the European east and west. Its studies deal with social, economic, anthropological, ethnological, political and cultural aspects, paying special attention to Slovene history – from the viewpoint of the entire region as well as from a local or micro-analytical perspective, and with regard to individual historical periods or developments of 'long duration'.
