Named after the poet Simon Jenko (1835-1869), the Jenko Award for the best poetry collection for the previous two years has been awarded annually by the Slovene Writers’ Association since 1986. The award's committee is mostly comprised by poets and usually includes the previous year's winner, which is why it is often referred to as an award "from poets to poets" and is generally highly regarded by its winners. The most recent winners of Jenko Award were Aleš Debeljak (2009), Andrej Medved (2008), and Tomaž Šalamun (2007).

At first the ceremony usually took place at the Prešeren Theatre Kranj. Since 1997 it was presented several times in Ljubljana at the Slovene Writers’ Association headquarters or in Cankarjev dom Culture and Congress Centre instead. In recent years, the ceremony has been accompanied by other activities dedicated to the poet Simon Jenko, including poetry readings, a symposium, exhibitions, and in 2009, a celebration of the 140th anniversary of his death. These events are known as Jenko Days (Slovenian: "Jenkovi dnevi").
