Music education programme
The primary school encompasses music theory and the basics of playing the selected instrument. The secondary school offers theoretical courses with subjects such as music history, theory, composition and solfeggio as well as classes for a selected instrument. The conservatory has also preschool education programmes. It has active string, wind and guitar orchestras at the primary educational level. At the secondary level pupils take part in the symphony orchestra, different chamber and jazz ensembles, as well as in mixed and chamber choirs. Since 1995 a special Škerjanec Award, named after the Slovene composer and musicologist Lucijan Marija Škerjanec (1900–1973), and various diplomas are handed to the best students.
Music competitions
In 2018, the International Piano Competition Janez Matičič, named after the Slovene composer, pianist and pedagogue Janez Matičič, was established. The conservatory also organizes annual regional, national and international competitions for young musicians and ballet dancers.
Emona Festival
Since 2011, the conservatory organizes Emona Festival, consisting of concerts, master classes, workshops and international music competition, which enables young people to get in touch with renowned pedagogues and musicians coming from respected foreign and domestic music institutions.
