The Scientific Research Centre (ZRC SAZU) was founded by the Slovene Academy of Sciences and Arts in 1981. It is a network of 17 institutes from the fields of the humanities and natural sciences. ZRC carries out the Slovene national research programme and, although it is an independent institution in its own right, engages in research into Slovenia’s natural and cultural heritage. Together with SASA, the Centre has been implementing the long-term programme Natural and Cultural Heritage of the Slovene Nation in the following institutes: the Fran Ramovš Institute of the Slovene Language, the Institute of Archaeology, the Milko Kos Institute of History, the France Stele Institute of Art History, the Institute of Musicology, the Institute of Slovene Literature and Literary Sciences, the Institute of Slovene Ethnology, the Institute of Ethnomusicology, the Institute for Emigration Studies, the Institute of Philosophy, the Anton Melik Institute of Geography, the Institute of Slovene Literature and Literary Sciences, the Karst Research Institute, the Ivan Rakovec Paleontological Institute, the Jovan Hadži Institute of Biology and the Institute of Medical Sciences. Funding for ZRC SAZU's projects is provided from Slovenia's national budget, predominantly through public tenders issued by the Ministry of Science and Technology. A part of the basic research is funded by different international private or governmental funds, while industry and enterprises support some applied research projects. ZRC SAZU's research strategies and policies are made and monitored by its Scientific Council. ZRC SAZU is the largest Slovene research centre in the humanities. It is also an important centre in Central, Eastern and South Eastern Europe. Within the past 10 years in particular it has become increasingly involved in international research projects in European Union, either through the European Commission, European Science Foundation or other organisations. Researchers of the ZRC SAZU publish some 30 scientific monographs and 600 scientific papers in Slovenia and abroad every year.

ZRC SAZU has its own publishing house and bookstore.
