Ivan Nedoh, Head of Archive Department

The Slovenian Cinematheque, established 1995, has a rich collection of Slovene and international films, and its Film Archive Department is responsible for their purchase, preservation, screening, and distribution. Since 2003 a selection of its films has been distributed in collaboration with Kinodvor Cinema to six local cinemas around Slovenia involved in the Art Cinema Network.

Background

Archives Section was formed virtually anew. Most film copies namely remained in the former central Cinematheque of Yugoslavia in Belgrade, Serbia. The collection was initially represented by 354 titles and 813 film copies, which were stored in appalling conditions: the water was leaking into the storage place. In the years since its foundation, the archives section of the Slovenian Cinematheque acquired in cooperation with the Slovenian film archives section of the Archives of the Republic of Slovenia and Slovenian Film Fund air-conditioned rooms in Gotenica, where the necessary work is being done to maintain the world's film heritage.

The archives also help in the maintenance and distribution of film copies of the Film Fund of the Republic of Slovenia.

Collections

Among the most valuable tapes of the collection are three major discoveries of Slovenian Cinematheque, with which the Cinematheque sensationally entered the world of famous film archives. These are: the oldest preserved feature film of Ernst Lubitsch When I was dead; the only preserved tinted copy of the film by Franz Hofer First traces of age; and also the only world coloured copy of the film The Juggler . Currently, the Slovenian Cinematheque film copies are being stored on 500 square meters of air-conditioned areas, whereas the surface of work areas is about 200 square meters. The collection contains 3000 film titles and 4200 film copies. Furthermore it is necessary to add a concern for the 1680 film copies of the Film Fund of the RS, which is also under supervision of the archival section.

The archival department employs four persons, which hardly manage all the work.
