The Ljubljana Puppet Theatre Festival first hosted puppeteers from all over the world in 1933. Fifty years later in 1983 the organisation hosted the second international conference on the training of professional puppeteers. In 1992, Ljubljana Puppet Theatre organised the 16th Congress of the International Union of the Marionette (UNIMA) in Ljubljana.
The festival is the gathering of puppet theatres, troupes, and puppetry schools from all over the world. The festival regularly receives over 130 applications to the festival, while the programme usually presents over twenty performances. The festival is comprised of an international puppet competition judged by a three-member international adult and a three-member children's jury, who present the Little Prince Award for the best performance, for the most original work, and for the best actor/animator, while members of a young jury select the performance they like best. Past festivals have featured puppetry performances from Croatia, the Czech Republic, France, Spain, the Netherlands, Italy, France, Germany, Cyprus, Norway, Poland, Hungary, Peru, Australia, the UK, Russia, Slovenia, and so on. The festival takes place in Ljubljana Puppet Theatre, Šentjakob Theatre, and elsewhere.
