The award is named after two great Slovene dramaturgs, essayists, theatre theoreticians, and founders of modern institutional dramaturgy in Slovenia, namely Herbert Grün (1925–1961) and Lojze Filipič (1921–1975). Until 2003, the award was delivered every third year, since then it is awarded every second year by the same jury of Slovene theatre practitioners and experts who awards the Grum Award for the best new Slovenian play.
The 2010 recipient of the special mention was the dramaturg Mojca Kranjc, a long-time collaborator of Slovene National Theatre Drama Ljubljana, the 2011 recipient was Eda Čufer who has worked with several independent stage directors since the 80s.
