Liminal was established in 2008 with the aim of transmitting and promoting the latest developments in the fields of anthropology, the humanities and social sciences. The non-profit and non-governmental organisation uses variety of means, from art to research and science, to popularise the results of the anthropological research.

Background

The founding members of the Institute (Špela Kalčić, Alja Adam, Jana Drašler, Neža Mrevlje, Katarina Župevc) explain the name, liminal, as derived from the Latin word 'limen', which means 'doorstep' and characterises the intermediary, hybrid, border-line, and the fluidity of the marginal meanings, actions, and expressions. In accordance with the description and the values the Institute nourishes, the organisation is open for new people, ideas and new members. The Institute's partners come from Slovenia and abroad: Institutum Studiorum Humanitatis (ISH), Institute of Strategy and Development Analysis (IRSA), Inštitut za antropološke raziskave (IAR), Slovene Ethnology and Anthropology Association KULA (which publishes KULA Journal), Society of Allies for Soft Landing, Krško (DZMP), Association pour la Promotion de la Nature et dela Culture (IZAT) from Nigeria, POD Teatar from Srbija, and many others.

Programme overview

The Institute comprises Research centre, Education and Study Excursions programme (to Nigeria, Algeria, etc.). Together with publication activities (c.f. Women on the Edge [Ženske na robu], published by the founding members) it also conducts Liminal projects, such as E-migrator, an attempt to create traveller's blog, and Stories across Europe [Zgodbe križem Evrope], an interdisciplinary project combined with literature, photography and anthropology.

In 2012 the Institute is attending the event Maribor, European Capital of Culture 2012 with the project United States TAM-TAM [Združene države TAM-TAM] representing the entity which as much as possible symbolises the real redistribution of services and goods.
