Instituto Cervantes (IC) is a worldwide non-profit organisation created by the Spanish government in 1991. Its mission is to promote the teaching, study and use of Spanish as a second language and to contribute to the advancement of Spanish and Hispanic American cultures throughout non-Spanish speaking countries.
In April 2005 the Instituto Cervantes Liubliana (also called Aula Cervantes), a branch of the Instituto Cervantes (IC) network, was opened in Ljubljana. Its establishment was based on the agreement signed between King Juan Carlos of Spain and the University of Ljubljana. Aula Cervantes in Ljubljana offers a reading room and a library containing literature, textbooks and multimedia items.
Apart from the Spanish language courses (offered through the advanced learning methods), the Institute organises also various cultural programmes and projects.
The Instituto Cervantes in Ljubljana supports also the performances by Spanish artists in Slovenia (for example, Paco de Lucía in Cankarjev dom in 2010).
