Cultural cooperation
The legal basis for cooperation in culture, education, and science between the Slovenia and the Netherlands was adopted in 1992 as a part of the succession of the former republic of Yugoslavia.
The embassy itself has limited funds to support activities in field of culture, however it supported some events in the past. Such funds are usually available through public tenders by the Ministry of Culture or tenders by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Slovenian heritage and community
In 2009 Milena Mulders, researcher of Slovenian heritage in the Netherlands, published an impressive research entitled Met de buik het brood achterna. Mijn Sloveense geschidenis (Amsterdam University Press, 2009). The book reveals the lives of many immigrant workers from Slovenia in beginning of the 20th century, mostly working in mines in Limburg, the Netherlands' southern province. On this occasion the embassy supported the Slovene translation of accompanied exhibition.
There are more than 1,000 Slovenians living in the Netherlands, in the recent years the number of Slovenia-born immigrants increased in the Randstad area (Amsterdam, Hague, Rotterdam, Utrecht), most of the moved there for study or work. There are two active associations in the community: Friends of Slovenia and Folk Dance Group Nizozemska.
