The European Affairs and International Cooperation Service of the Ministry of Culture fosters and facilities international co-operation in the field of culture with the aim of promoting Slovene culture at the bilateral, multilateral and regional levels.

The office co-operates in the preparation of international framework agreements and programmes, preparing inter-ministerial bilateral co-operation programmes and strategies and supervising and monitoring their execution. It directs Slovene international co-operation in multilateral international organisations, other multilateral connections (UNESCO) and regional initiatives.

The office advances and prepares a promotional strategy for Slovene culture in co-operation with other ministries, diplomatic-consular representatives, cultural institutions and other organisations. It co-operates on a regular basis with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and with the Slovenian Tourist Board regarding the cultural tourism issues.

There are annual open calls for Slovenian artists, translators, critics, curators or researchers in the field of arts and culture who can compete for a one month residency in the New York, Berlin, London and Vienna appartment offered on disposal by the Ministry of Culture. A special committee of experts from various disciplines evaluates applications and proposes the final selection to the Minister. The office monitors also the programme of the Slovenian Culture and Information Centre, Vienna. In June 2016 the Slovenian Cultural Centre in Berlin was set up, it is located at the Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia Berlin.

Since 2011 special funding can be acquired from the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs for the selected cultural events organised by the Slovene embassies and consulates round the world. The Embassies propose the projects they would like to support during the next few months, further selection is made by the Ministries commission.

The office has monitored Slovene co-operation in the Culture Programme 2007–2013 and the new Creative Europe Programme in co-operation with the appointed Creative Europe Desk Slovenia, and supports the Culture.si portal for international cooperation.
