The programming activities of KUD Sestava are mainly tied to the Celica Hostel, of which an integral part is the gallery Srečišče. Here, at least one exhibition per month is being set, presenting artists of rather varied mediums and persuasions. Some of them were Mitja Ficko, Mirko Malle, Serafina Loszach, Tomaž Gorjup, Rajko Korbar, Mileta Postić and Jindřich Štreit. Featured were also the works of Anna Watzinger, at that time hosted by KUD Mreža at its Asylum Studio.

There are also numerous poetry and literature readings, with one of the cycles themed around the works of contemporary female poets. Among the various workshops, there was also a poetry translation workshop called Reka v Ljubljani, coproduced with Slovenian the literary journal Poiesis, the Croatian journal Književnost, and the Gulag Institute. A similarly themed workshop was held with poets from Slovenia and Italy, among them Luisa Gastaldo, Marina Moretti, Andraž Polič, Tone Škrjanec and Kaja Teržan.

Aside from the exhibitions, the gallery is being used for regular film screenings, for dance events (with, for example, another Asylum resident, the dancer Naoko Maeshiba) and for numerous poetry and literature readings, round tables (on humanities, culture, art, politics), storytelling evenings, lecture on science (from history to biology), etc.

Running a series of programmes and events that deal with music, visual arts, literature, poetry, film, architecture and so on, the KUD Sestava is an independent cultural producer of a rather wide-ranging profile. The bulk of its activities is taking place at Celica, a hostel establishment inside the Metelkova mesto Autonomous Cultural Zone.

In order to run the programme there, most notably a gallery and a series of weekly music gigs, Sestava collaborates with a number of outside protagonists, among them KUD Mreža Arts and Culture Association and the Folk Slovenia Cultural Society. Together with the Godibodi Institute it also co-produces the annual Godibodi Festival.

Background

Already in 1993, when the ex military barracks premises were squatted and when subsequently the Metelkova mesto was formed, the members of KUD Sestava (which was formalised as an association for culture in 1997) were working to establish a hostel at there. They had their eyes set on an ex military prison building, and in the early 2000s, they have managed to get this project started.

KUD Sestava led the renovation, with the architect – and the head of the Sestava association – Janko Rožič being responsible for the planning. In the process they've invited around 80 artists to shape and design the newly founded Celica Hostel. This opened its doors in 2003 and soon after, the association began running a regular programme of events and exhibitions.

Programme

The programming activities of KUD Sestava are mainly tied to the Celica Hostel, of which an integral part is the gallery Srečišče. Here, at least one exhibition per month is being set, presenting artists of rather varied mediums and persuasions. Some of them were Mitja Ficko, Mirko Malle, Serafina Loszach, Tomaž Gorjup, Rajko Korbar, Mileta Postić and Jindřich Štreit. Featured were also the works of Anna Watzinger, at that time hosted by KUD Mreža at its Asylum Studio.

Music

The main part of the musical programme is a series of weekly events called Sozvočja sveta (Chords of the worlds), held from the year 2003 onwards. It runs a very strong programme of mainly Slovenian bands, predominately of ethno and jazz aesthetics. One can here mention Bojan Cvetrežnik, Janez Dovč, Boštjan Gombač, Marko Hatlak and Samo Kutin – all were playing in their respective bands and often also in various ad hoc collectives. These gigs tend to be followed with jam sessions, which sometimes also accompany literary evening and other events.

Amongst some other music related happenings, there are music workshops for non-musicians, of which a recent example is a project done together with the Folk Slovenia Cultural Society. Focused on folk music and folk singing, it featured the vernacular musics of various Slovene minorities as well as songs from Bulgaria and Sri Lanka.

Other projects

A curious enterprise was also a poetry translation workshop called Reka v Ljubljani, co-produced with the Slovenian the literary magazine Poiesis, the Croatian journal called Književnost, and the Gulag Institute. A similarly themed workshop was held with poets from Slovenia and Italy, among them Luisa Gastaldo, Marina Moretti, Andraž Polič, Tone Škrjanec and Kaja Teržan.

An interesting project on creating animated films, called Demonova piščal (Demon's flute), was done together with 2 Reels - Association for Reanimation of Storytelling, .
