Institute K6/4 was established in 2000 as a result of the restructuring of the Student Organisation of the University of Ljubljana (ŠOU LJubljana) which is also one of its founders (the other is the Union of Student Clubs of Slovenia). Hosted in the building of the Student Organisation of the University of Ljubljana, it uses its infrastructure for a range of different projects and programmes, most of which were already run by its founder/host in the years before the establishment of Institute K6/4. The programming philosophy of Institute K6/4 is based on an ambition to become the central Slovene platform for live, emerging and thought-provoking culture. To this end the Institute is developing numerous programmes and projects within which young creators can efficiently express their creative energy, sharpen it with educational activities and assess it with the help of the audience. Over 100 courses and lectures, 250 cultural events and 20 new artworks are produced every year.
Projects
Institute K6/4 is one of Slovenian leading promoters of media art, computer culture and open source software. Its computer culture centre Cyberpipe is a well-equipped open platform for experimental research of new ways of using technologies of digital production. It organizes many educational events and engages primarily in open code programming and the recycling of computer devices. One of Cyberpipe's most important project is HAIP Feastival, a multimedia biennial of open technologies. HAIP puts on display multimedia art forms of the young artists and creative engineers on international level. It interactively presents a review of free creative use of technology in the visual, sound and mass media and encourages direct interaction with audiences.
K6/4 explores emerging artistic expressions and presents international art trends. Part of the K6/4 is a platform of contemporary research of artistic practices Kapelica Gallery, which aims to establish a critical awareness of social practices and development of the society. Kapelica's emphasis is on research, exploring and experimenting the limits of artistic discourses and urban poetics. It supports long-term development of the projects and presents Slovene and international artists. In 2011 it presented Marko Batista, Maja Smrekar, Špela Petrič, Paul Vanouse, Art Orienté objet and many others.
One of the most popular K6/4 projects is the alternative contemporary music and visual arts venue Klub K4 that offers diverse program of contemporary music genres, such as minimal, house, techno, drum'n'bass, breakbeat, funk, nu rave, electro, hip hop, rock etc. It hosts guest artists from abroad and combines different forms of artistic expression.
K6/4 runs an initiative for business investments in culture Generika and many smaller projects. It was also an organiser of the Break Festival from 1997 through 2007.
