In addition to its regular theatre, music and film programme, the venue hosts several annual cultural events, for instance the Vilenica International Writers’ Gathering and the Mladifest summer festival.

Though the construction of this cultural centre started in 1979, the place first opened its doors in 1991. It was initially designed by a group of five architects – Vojteh Ravnikar, Marko Dekleva, Matjaž Garzarolli, Egon Vatovec and Mladen Marčina.
