The PUF actually had started off some years before, as a part of the [[Primorska Summer Festival]] organised annually in the Coastal Region. Taking place throughout the summer, the festival includes premières of new Slovene puppetry productions and presentations of prize-winning performances. Each year, the festival also produces an international festival production in collaboration with the Academy of Performing Arts (DAMU) from Prague. Past festivals have featured performances by visiting artists and arts groups from Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, France, Spain, and Italy, as well as groups from Slovenia.
