Founded in 1899, the Slovenian Association of Fine Arts Societies is the oldest professional association of Slovene fine artists. During its long and distinguished history it was this organisation which took the initiative to establish the National Gallery of Slovenia, the Museum of Modern Art, the Academy of Fine Arts and Design, and several smaller galleries, as well as the fine art magazines Umetnost (1936), Sinteza (1961) and most recently Likovne besede Magazine [Art Words] (in print since 1985).

Activities and organisation

The Association engages in the conception and implementation of various exhibitions and artistic events at home and abroad, and in the creation and publication of artists' books and catalogues. Its secretariat monitors the regulation of legal acts concerning the status of visual artists in Slovenia and cooperates accordingly with the Ministry of Culture, which is also the main funder of the Association's programmes. It currently has 10 regional associations which represent approximately 650 individual members.

It organises the annual May Salon exhibition of its members' work and the Biennial of Slovene Book Illustration. It also bestows the Hinko Smrekar Award, the May Salon Award and the Rihard Jakopič Award.

The Association runs its own gallery, the Slovenian Association of Fine Arts Societies (ZDSLU) Gallery, where it organises individual and smaller group exhibitions, presentations of graphic portfolios and various cycles.

International cooperation

When the Slovenian Association of Fine Arts Societies joined the Yugoslav union for the second time after 1945 it also became member of the AIAP/IAA and remained a member until the independence of Slovenia in 1991, when it received a status of the observer.

International networking has involved organisations such as INTART, Kunstverein fűr Kärtnen, Austria; Associazione Centro Friulano Arti Plastiche, Italy; BBK Bonn-Rhein-Sieg, Germany; HDLU, HDLUZ, Germany; Konstaerenas Rijksoerganisation, Stockholm, Sweden; AAPM Madrid, Spain; Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris, France; the Kunststation Kleinsassen, Germany; and the Voipaala Art Centre, Finland.

Since 2009 the Union organises International Ceramics Triennial Unicum in cooperation with European Cultural and Technological Centre (EKTC) Maribor.
