In addition to being among the 8 largest domestic appliance manufacturers in Europe, with over 50 years of tradition, the Velenje-based Gorenje company has been a patron of the arts for some decades, by sponsoring contemporary arts events and collecting works of art. The Gorenje Art Collection comprises 800 works by Slovene contemporary artists. A part of it was donated to the Municipality of Velenje and is managed by Velenje Gallery. A permanent exhibition of 65 artworks is on view at Velenje Museum in the Velenje Castle.
The representative selection offers a chronological insight into Slovene art of the 20th century starting with the Slovene Impressionists (Rihard Jakopič, Matija Jama, Matej Sternen). The collection includes some high quality works by Ivan Napotnik, Veno Pilon, Tone Kralj, Božidar Jakac, France Mihelič, Gabrijel Stupica, Elda Piščanec, Jože Tisnikar, Janez Bernik, France Rotar, and others.
