The Lighting Guerrilla Festival was initially started as a workshop at the festival The Detectives of the Light [Detektivi svetlobe], only a year later 2008 it evolved into an exciting three-weeks long spring event. The concept of the light represents the main topic of events at the festival: from lectures, exhibitions, public interventions, installations to performances.

Background, venues and locations

The festival was founded by Strip Core, the comic art production section of the Forum Ljubljana, and since its inception it explores the relations between the light, the public and the gallery space.

Throughout the years it has grown in size and scope, the events not only take place in Ljubljana but also in Kranj and Novo mesto, hosted in different art venues: the Vžigalica Gallery, the Tovarna Rog, the SCCA-Ljubljana Centre for Contemporary Arts, the Kino Šiška, and the Slovene Ethnographic Museum.

The festival is known for its luminous exhibition objects presented with the public interventions (including artists like Aleksandra Stratimirović, Bernard Murigneux, NatanEsku, Benedetto Bufalino, Sophie Guyot, and many others), that take place at several site-specific locations: the Ljubljanica bridges and quays, the French Revolution Square, the Tivoli Park, streets and gardens etc.

Collaborations and international cooperation

The festival regularly invites local, regional and international artists and producers. Since the inception, it is co-financed with the help of Ministry of Culture and Municipality of Ljubljana. Since 2009 the festival receives some funds also from the French Cultural Institute Charles Nodier and in 2008 the programme of the festival was presented at the Ljubljana Spring Festival.

In 2011, the relation between the light and the sound is explored together with 16 artists, institutions and producers, adding new dimensions and locations. In the Light and Sound edition new collaborations were established with: the Koper Grammar School - Ginnasio Capodistria, the Cirkulacija 2, the Academy of Fine Arts and Design and the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Ljubljana.
