History

Radio Študent (RŠ) started its project Klubski maraton, or Club Marathon in 2001. The programme has its roots in the 'Novi Rock' festival that took place from 1980-2000, which divided into 'Novi Novi Rock' and 'Club Marathon' when the organisers split into two organisations, ŠKUC Ropot and Radio Študent (RŠ) Club Marathon respectively. In 2007 the five-member jury of Radio Študent selected six bands who created uncompromising original contemporary rock: Tavžentroža, Diego, Chernibog in Y and the young Coma Stereo and Carnaval.

Venues

Club Marathon begins in September with live concerts in the Radio Študent studios, followed by the Slovenia tour, which ends with a special 'Finale' in the beginning of November at Klub Menza pri koritu.

Selected bands have presented their music to the public around Slovenia at venues such as Nada Žagar Youth Club (MKNŽ) Ilirska Bistrica, Rdeča ostriga Club in Škofja Loka, MIKK Youth Information Cultural Club, Murska Sobota, Pekarna Cultural Centre in Maribor, MC Podlaga, Sežana, AKD Izbruh in Kranj, Bela krajina Youth Cultural Club (MKK Črnomelj), Postojna Youth Centre, Velenje Youth Centre (MC Velenje), Pivka House of Culture, Mostovna Cultural Centre in Nova Gorica, Brežice Youth Centre (MC Brežice), Society of Allies for Soft Landing, Krško (DZMP), M& KC Koper Youth and Culture Centre in Koper-Capodistria, and MMC Mink Multimedia Centre in Tolmin.

Programme

Radio Študent (RŠ) is keen to discover and encourage young and relatively unknown Slovene musical artists and bands that show originality, creativity and the potential to evolve into respected Slovene innovators, as is clearly demonstrated in its project Klubski maraton, or Club Marathon.

Since 2001 Club Marathon has worked to support and promote the domestic musical scene, opening itself to a wide range of genres and creating opportunities for the entire range of independent, alternative musical production. Its six-week tour of the Slovene club circuit offers young musicians the experience of touring, performing and making public appearances and developing other important skills. Conversely, Radio Študent 'gives' around 20 concerts (and critically-selected musical artists) to Slovene clubs, supporting and connecting with the Slovene musical and club scene. Radio Študent also organises concerts in the neighbouring countries of Croatia, Hungary and Italy for the six chosen bands.

After live concerts in the Radio Študent studios and the Slovenia tour, at the 'Finale' in at Klub Menza pri koritu all six bands/artists perform, demonstrating what they learned on the tour.

Radio Študent also releases a CD compilation of the event every year. An alternative concert known as Concert Marathon, which includes bands who did not make the final cut, is also organised.

International cooperation

The concerts of the tour are also organised in the neighbouring countries of Croatia, Hungary and Italy for the six chosen bands.
